埃利．維瑟爾(Elie Wiesel)1928.9.30生，是羅馬尼亞裔猶太人，美國作家，在1986年獲得諾貝爾和平獎。
埃利．維瑟爾在他為數不少的文學作品中，見證了猶太民族血淚斑斑、流離失所的歷史，他曾說：「歌德說，人在悲痛時會沈默，這時候，上帝便把歌唱悲傷的力量給了人。從此，人再也不可能選擇不歌唱。……我爲什麽書寫呢？為的是受害者不被遺忘，為的是幫助死者戰勝死亡。」
為甚麼要書寫呢？因為「人與強權的爭鬥，是一場記憶與忘卻的爭鬥」，「書寫是一種爭鬥，對抗忘卻的爭鬥。」

在第一部《黑夜》(Night)中，作者回憶著集中營的日子，他們曾被強迫觀看死刑的執行。有一次，一個中年猶太人和一位小孩被吊死。看到這個場面，這位年僅14歲的孩子的身旁，有個微弱的聲音說：「上帝在哪裡？」又過了一會兒，那人又生氣、又無奈的發出相同的問題：「上帝在哪裡？」這時有一個輕輕的聲音說：「上帝和他們同被吊。」這句話安慰了在場的人，因為他們憑信心相信上帝在他們的苦難中。
